The start of the new year is the perfect time to look forward. Forecasting requires constant horizon scanning, looking for clues that could signal the next big thing. I’ve identified 22 trends that will rule the home industry in the year ahead. Some of these trends, I’ve written about previously. Others, I will explore more in depth in the weeks to come. But all these trends are either currently going strong, or will be soon. So here they are (in no particular order)—my top 22 decor trends for 2022!

As dopamine dressing filters into home space, so too do bright colors, with bold prints, and energizing patterns. Dopamine décor has its roots in maximalism but goes beyond just filling space with color and pattern to include other happy-inducing elements like texture, lighting, and even sound and scent.

Both contemporary and historic companies, as well as individual artists and designers are finding ways to recast traditional practices in fresh light. Examples include Dior’s exhibition of Medallion Chairs during Milan Design Week, the Royal Creatures collection by GamFratesi for Royal Copenhagen, and Alice Walton’s reimagining of classic Wedgwood shapes.

As climate change continues to dominate our thoughts and actions, lesser used materials are gaining traction in the home décor sector. Once relegated to use in cans and garden furniture, aluminum is starting to take center stage as a luxe material used by designers including Tom Dixon, Mathieu Lehanneur, and Bocci.

Pinterest has already started seeing a 11-fold increase on searches for luxe laundry rooms while Google Trends shows a 70% increase over last year in searches for basement makeover ideas.
